Forms In Flux.

13th & 14th of December 2020, online.

IKLECTIK off-site

If a text for performance isn’t just a sequence of words to be read from start to finish, what else can it be? How can we expand, shift, and disrupt the relationship between a text/poem and its performance? What new systems can we create and use?

Forms In Flux was a livestreamed exploration into process-led poetic/textual performance, showcasing the works of seven brilliant artists experimenting with new ways of producing texts and new approaches to devising and designing performance.

We were delighted to present two evenings of expressive machines and recursive utterance, participatory glitches and self-destroying texts, physical constraints and digital chaos!

OUR PROGRAMME

Forms In Flux included two headliners, Nathan Walker & Jörg Piringer, and four brilliant contributions from performance maker Ana Coltatu, sound and media artist Christina Karpodini, poet and artist Alison Grace Koehler, and experimental composer Alaa Yussry (cerpintxt).

Their works explored the performative potential of systematic and procedural modes of composition through pieces engaging with the performativity of compositional materials, that employed systems to dynamically disrupt a text’s structure and content, or that became independent systems for holding and realising texts.

Xavier Velastín, Forms In Flux’s Co-Curator, used the event itself as compositional material to generate a new performance.

For more information about our curatorial approach, take a look at our Curators’ Note in Tentacular Magazine.

Thanks to all those of you who joined us online on the days!

Christina Karpodini.png

Christina Karpodini.

Christina Karpodini is a Greek composer, media artist and performer whose work explores the effectiveness of computer music. Through her sonic practice she aims to bring listeners closer to nature and the environment as well as their inner selves and mentality. Her pieces are characterised by playful visual aesthetics and futuristic 20th century music influences. Her practice focuses on electroacoustic compositions, interactive installations and instruments making. Her music education started from a young age and so far she has achieved various music instrument diplomas, a Master in Music Composition and a Master in Computational Arts. Her compositions have been played at various festivals and conferences around the world and she has proudly curated the soundscapes and sound design for two theatrical productions of the Greek Art Theatre. For the past 5 years she has been based in London exhibiting and performing at various venues (Horniman museum, A&SM#4.5, Hack and Scratch).

Alison Grace Koehler.png

Alison Grace Koehler.

Alison Grace Koehler makes windows out of words, out of colorful and broken glass shards, in the city of light. Her first book 'Stained Glass Poetry' was published in 2020 by Paris Heretics. She has performed her poetry at events including the Bloomsday Festival, Irruzioni, Edinburgh Art Festival, Tamaas, Paris Lit Up, and le Bordel de la Poésie. Her art has been exhibited at spaces including the Cité Internationale des Arts, Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre, Seymour Space, and Espace Christiane Peugeot.

Nathan Walker.png

Nathan Walker.

Nathan Walker’s practice explores the vocal-body as an emergent space of enquiry into language, sound and writing. In their live work, the vocal-body is both the material and the initial site of performance. They also explore the page as a site and location for expanded explorations of language through mark-making and as scores for embodied vocal performances.

Their practice is action-oriented, which is to say they work toward a poetics of action that uses performance and time-based media. They often describe their work by reclaiming the little-used phrase ‘action poetry’ which more precisely locates their trans-disciplinary practice existing both across and between performance art and poetry. They teach time-based practice in Fine Art and Photography at York St John University.

Xavier Velastìn.png

Xavier Velastín.

Xavier Velastín (xvelastín) is a sound artist, sound designer and whale lover whose practice is rooted in voice, agency, structural composition and liveness. He has a background in classical piano, interactive electroacoustic composition and the musicology of club music. His pieces are an eclectic blend of intricately composed atmospheres and visceral, unpredictable performance art. The structural organisation of his pieces, whether employing dynamic electronic scores, non-linear chronologies or human-computer improvisation, is always informed by the fundamental impermanence of the liveness of live performance. Xavier specialises in designing intuitive systems for real-time sonic interaction, which has included creating a voice-destroying granulator for the utterance poem ||:&itbreathes:||, manipulating oceanic soundscapes using his voice and gesture for the experimental gig [whalesong], hacking a flight simulator joystick to transform his screams for the sound poem Gut Feelings, and making a human-to-whale speech translator for his flagship theatre performance Me & My Whale.

Alaa Yussry.png

Alaa Yussry.

A post-ape progress report from the cosmic madhouse, through the medium of voice, auto-destruction, wind-guided, meekly ritualistic, discordant experiments in protoconversation. Alaa ‘cerpintxt’ is an Egyptian electroacoustic and darkjazz artist working with clarinet, tape and reel manipulations, modular synthesis, somatic and generative composition. Her recent projects include a semi-improvisational musical game navigating perceptions of the self and its extensions within the symbolic network, to create a sonic deposit for shared subtleties in experiences. Her psychology research derives interventions for attentive listening's positive impact on death anxiety and posttraumatic growth, and reinforcing sonic activism by diverging from the pharmaceutical approach to sound.

Ana Coltatu.png

Ana Coltatu.

Ana Coltatu is a London-based performer, writer, creator, director and multi-disciplinary artist working at the intersection of performance, movement, text and different mediums and instruments that combine into an experience shared with the public. Her works create a journey through rhythms and layers of interpretation that expose the audience to investigations about meaning, roles, limits, prejudices, responsibility, self-discovery and self-acceptance. Some of Ana’s most recent creations include collaborations with artists from different disciplines like the ones made with Luigi Ambrosio (choreographer and movement director), Anna Perach and Rachel Cheung (fine arts), Laura Guarch (music), Danae Baert (choreographer). Her latest finished and presented works ranged from site-specific pieces (“Signed by the artist” – 2019 – King’s Cross Train Station, London) to installations (“Hometopia” – 2018 – Goldsmiths) and immersive text based theatre-performance-live art journeys (“It Only Happens Once” – 2019 – Studio 1&2 – George Wood Theatre).
